February 8, 2022, marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of Blagovest Sendov. He passed away on January 19, 2020, shortly before reaching the age of 88.
The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics will commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Sendov with the following talk by Edward Saff from Vanderbilt University, USA
Sampling with Minimal Energy:
A talk in commemoration of B. Sendov’s 90th birth date.
This lecture is a part of the Consortium Distinguished Lecture series, organized jointly by the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami and the International Center for Mathematical Sciences at IMI-BAS, whose first director was professor Sendov. The event will be held online via Zoom on February 9, 2022, at 6 o’clock PM (EEST, Sofia time).
Professor Edward Saff is a distinguished specialist in the theory of approximations, editor-in-chief of Springer’s journal Constructive Approximation and Director of the Center for Constructive Approximations at Vanderbilt University. He has been a foreign member of BAS since 2013. He has a long and productive relationship with Bulgaria and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. In 2014, he established the annual Rose and Irving Saff Mathematics Award, awarded to a Bulgarian mathematics student for outstanding achievement and excellence in mathematics.
Prof. Sendov is a world-famous Bulgarian mathematician, a dedicated innovator educator, a prominent statesman and a respected public figure.
He graduated from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, and later specialized in computational mathematics at Moscow State University. Since 1968 he had been a professor of computational mathematics at Sofia University.
Prof. Sendov was the youngest doctor of sciences, the youngest professor and the youngest rector of Sofia University. He was one of the brightest figures in the scientific life of Bulgaria. His scientific work was of great impression with its content, diversity and productivity until the very end of his life. He was the author of over 200 scientific publications, several monographs, numerous textbooks and popular articles. Prof. Sendov was one of the pioneers of informatics in Bulgaria and together with prof. Lyubomir Iliev has a fundamental contribution to its complex development in the country. He was a key figure in the team that created the first Bulgarian digital-electronic computer “Vitosha” and one of the world’s first electronic calculators “Elka 6521”.
Prof. Sendov was a courageous reformer of the educational system at all levels. In 1970, as a Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at Sofia University, he introduced the three-level form of education (Bachelor, Master and PhD). It was not until twenty-five years later that such an organization of university education was adopted throughout the European Union.
Prof. Sendov is a prominent statesman and public figure. He was Rector of Sofia University, Chairman of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria and Ambassador of Bulgaria to Japan.

On 14 January we celebrate World Logic Day
World Logic Day was celebrated for the first time on January 14, 2019. The date chosen, 14 January, corresponds to the date of death of Kurt Gödel and the date of birth of Alfred Tarski, two of the most prominent logicians of the twentieth century. On 26 November 2019, UNESCO proclaimed 14 January to be World Logic Day and included it in its list of International Days. This year, World Logic Day will be celebrated for the fourth time. The event is very popular worldwide. Last year there were 82 scientific events in 40 countries and this year 50 countries have already registered to participate.
For a second time, after January 15, 2021, the logicians at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” will celebrate together World Logic Day organizing a Joint Meeting of the Algebra and Logic Seminar at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Seminar of the Department of Mathematical Logic and Its Applications of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the Seminar of Logic at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Linguistic Technologies of the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The meeting will be held on January 14, 2022 (Friday) from 10:00 to 15:30 Bulgarian time (+2UCT) and the opening ceremony will be from 10:00 to 10:30.
The scientific forum is already included in the official program of the Fourth World Logic Day.
The scientific program of the event consists of 6 research talks by scientists of the four institutions and one talk by a Polish mathematician. More information for our meetings dedicated to the World Logic Days in 2021 and 2022 may be found on the home page of the Algebra and Logic Seminar of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. The abstracts of the talks could also be found on the same web page.
First Annual Bulgarian-Russian Mathematical Summit
The First Annual Bulgarian-Russian Mathematical Summit will be held in Sochi, Russia on December 12, 2021.
The event is organized by the International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia (ICMS-Sofia), the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Higher School of Economics, National Research University, Moscow (HSE University).
The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will be represented by prof. Velichka Milousheva, Deputy Director of the Institute and Deputy Director of the ICMS-Sofia. She will host the forum jointly with Sergey Gorchinskiy, Science Deputy Director of the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
An essential part of the activities of the ICMS – Sofia is directed towards making a research and educational impact on cutting edge mathematical problems. The main goal of the First Annual Bulgarian-Russian Mathematical Summit is to continue the best traditions in the cooperation between the Bulgarian and the Russian scientists as well as to create new long-term collaborations among mathematicians in Bulgaria and Russia, to disseminate new results and to increase the impact of scientific work of the mathematical and scientific communities in both countries.
Second International Conference Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe
The International Center for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS-Sofia) and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the Miami University (IMSA) are organizing the Second International Conference Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe. The conference will be held online on December 9 and 10, 2021.
The initiative Women in Mathematics of South-Eastern Europe, aiming at promoting the role of female mathematicians, started in Dec 2020, when the inaugural conference took place. A special distinguished guest of the inaugural conference was prof. Mina Teicher from the Department of Mathematics and Gonda Brain Research Center, Bar-Ilan University, Israel, Director of Emmy Noether Institute for Mathematics.
The organizers intend to make these conferences annual. The main goal of this initiative is to celebrate women in mathematics, disseminate new results and create new long-term collaborations among scientists in South-Eastern Europe.
The organizers of the event expect that through participation women mathematicians will attract the attention of young researchers and researchers from less-favoured countries.
Special guests in this year’s edition of the forum are distinguished mathematicians Barbara Drnovšek from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia and Nadya Morozova from the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES), France.
The speakers are proposed by an international committee including Mina Teicher (Department of Mathematics and Gonda Brain Research Center, Director of Emmy Noether Institute for Mathematics), Phillip Griffiths (Professor Emeritus, Institute for Advanced Study, USA), Ludmil Katzarkov (Miami University, Co-director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas), Velichka Milousheva (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Deputy Director).
