Second Annual Meeting of Young Bulgarian Mathematicians
The International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia is organizing for a second consecutive year a meeting of young Bulgarian mathematicians from around the world.
The conference will take place at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI-BAS) on June 13 – 14, 2022.
A special guest of the event is Prof. Yuri Tschinkel from Courant Institute, NYU and Simons Foundation Director, Mathematics and Physical Sciences. We envision two main outcomes of this meeting:
- Enriching the relations between young mathematicians working in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian mathematical diaspora;
- Enhancing the professional development of young Bulgarian mathematicians by presenting to them new career opportunities through national and European scientific programs.
The conclusion of the scientific part of the event on June 14 will be followed by a round table to discuss these opportunities. We are all elated by this exciting event and we are looking forward to seeing you at IMI-BAS.
The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics organize a lecture by Prof. Yuri Tschinkel
On Monday, June 13, 2022, Prof. Yuri Tschinkel will give a lecture entitled Building Scientific Institutes and will share his experience with funding research through private business. The event will take place at the Intercontinental Hotel Sofia at 5:30 pm.
Professor Tschinkel is visiting Bulgaria at the invitation of the International Center for Mathematical Sciences of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (IMI-BAS). He is a special guest at the conference Second Annual Meeting of Young Bulgarian Mathematicians, which will be hosted at IMI–BAS from 13 to 14 June 2022. The purpose of the meeting is to bring together young Bulgarian mathematicians working around the world and to acquaint the mathematical community in our country with some of their most significant achievements.
Yuri Tschinkel is an algebraic geometer who covers a broad spectrum of subjects – from arithmetics to complex geometry. He was educated at Moscow State University and received his doctorate in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Tschinkel has obtained spectacular results in counting points over different fields and stable rationality. For his work, he has been elected to Academia Europea and Leopoldina, the German National Academy of Sciences. He has been a speaker at the International Mathematical Congress of 2006.
Yuri Tschinkel is a Director of Simons Foundation, Mathematics and Physical Sciences division. The Simons Foundation is a private foundation established in 1994 by Marilyn and Jim Simons. The foundation is one of the largest charitable organizations in the USA. It makes grants in four areas: Mathematics and Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, autism research (Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative) and Outreach, Education and Engagement.
IMI offers postdoctoral positions in the fields of Coding Theory, Algebraic geometry, Cryptography and Combinatorics
The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences announces postdoctoral positions in the fields of Coding Theory, Cryptography, Combinatorics, and Mathematical Biology, funded by the Bulgarian Research Program Enhancing the Research Capacity in Mathematical Sciences (PIKOM).
The duration of the positions is 6 or 12 months, extendable for up to 36 months. Successful candidates will work in the department of Mathematical Foundations of Informatics and will be affiliated with the International Center for Mathematical Sciences, Sofia (ICMS-Sofia), which is part of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics.

Official awarding of the Bulgarian winners in the Australian Mathematics Competition
On 3 May in the Conference Hall of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on a solemn ceremony was awarded the Bulgarian winners in the Australian Mathematics Competition for 2020 and 2021.
Prizes were awarded personally by His Excellency Arthur Spirou, Ambassador of Australia to Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. The event was attended also by the Honorary Consul of Australia in Bulgaria – Mrs Indiana Trifonova.
Australian Mathematics Competition is a competition for students from 3rd to 12th grade. It was established in 1976 and is one of the largest of its kind in the world – every year in AMC participate more than half a million students from 38 countries. Since 1994 Bulgaria has always medalists in this competition.
Prof. Dennis P. Sullivan is the winner of the Abel Prize for 2022

Dennis Parnell Sullivan is an American mathematician most famous for his ground-breaking work on topology and dynamical systems, two fields in which ideas about geometric structure play a central role. A charismatic and lively member of the mathematics community, he has found deep connections between a dazzling variety of areas of mathematics.
In its citation, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the organization that administers the Abel, said Prof. Sullivan was honoured “for his groundbreaking contributions to topology in its broadest sense, and in particular its algebraic, geometric and dynamical aspects.”
Among his significant results in topology is his proof of the Adams conjecture, and in dynamical systems he proved that rational maps have no wandering domains, solving a 60-year-old conjecture. His insistent probing for fundamental understanding, and his capacity to see analogues between diverse areas of mathematics and build
bridges between them, has forever changed the field. Dennis P. Sullivan has won numerous awards, among them the Steele Prize, the 2010 Wolf Prize in Mathematics and the 2014 Balzan Prize for Mathematics. He is also a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
Ulrike Tillmann, a mathematician at the University of Oxford who served on the Abel committee, said that given Dr Sullivan’s “absolutely fantastic work” in both algebraic topology and dynamical systems, “it was a very easy decision to make.”
The prize is accompanied by 7.5 million Norwegian kroner, or about $850,000.
“Mathematics is truly a passion that provides a never-ending stream of curiosities and puzzles, and I’ve been privileged to spend each day of my professional life in the company of the many talented colleagues and students who have conspired with me to tackle these challenges so that we might better understand the rules of the universe. This award is as much a testament to their hard work and insights as it is a gift to me.” Prof. Sullivan says to the CUNY Graduate Center’s website.
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, on behalf of the Ministry of Education, awards the Abel Prize, and it will be officially presented by His Majesty King Harald at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway on May 24.
