IMI organizes an International Conference Trends in Combinatorial Ring Theory, dedicated to Vesselin Drensky
On September 20, 2021, at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, the official opening of the International Conference Trends in Combinatorial Ring Theory shall take place. The conference is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Acad. Veselin Drensky.
The co-organizers of the event are the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing, State University of Campinas, Brazil and Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. The Conference is partially supported by the Bulgarian National Science Fund.
The purpose of the Conference is to present the current state of the art in the area of Ring Theory and its applications and related fields. In particular, the main topics of the conference include:
- Combinatorial and Computational Ring Theory
- Group Theory
- Тheory of PI-algebras
- Commutative and Noncommutative Invariant Theory
- Lie and Jordan Algebras and Superalgebras
- Matrix Algebras
The impressive scientific program of the event includes reports of world-renowned scientists, including the Fields Medal laureate Efim Zelmanov, the scientific advisor of Vesselin Drensky – Prof. Yuri Bakhturin and others.
Visiting fellowships for the WIMSA
The International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia (ICMS-Sofia) in collaboration with the Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami (IMSA) offers three fellowships for WIMSA 2021 – 2022 Programme.
WIMSA is a Women in Mathematics part of the women-oriented section of IMSA. The Fall semester of the Year Long Programme 2021 – 2022 includes the following events:
- Braids in Mathematics, October 25 – 29, 2021
- WIMSA Inaugural Conference, November 17 – 20, 2021
- Hodge theory and combinatorics, November 28 – December 2, 2021
The Spring semester January – April 2022 will be dedicated to Mathematics in Neurosciences and Mathematical Biology.
The fellowships provide covering of travel, lodging and per deem expenses for ten days and offer the possibility for giving a talk at one of the WIMSA events. The selection process will be
administered by ICMS. Interested candidates may apply by sending a cover letter (personal statement), a CV, and (optional) a letter of recommendation.
The applications should be submitted by June 26, 2021, on the following e-mail: info@icms.bg.
The Selection Committee includes:
Chair: Prof. Stephen Cantrell, Director of IMSA
Members: Prof. Mina Teicher, Director of WIMSA
Prof. Oleg Mushkarov, Director of ICMS
On June 30, 2021, the winners will be announced at a joint ICMS – IMSA meeting in Sofia.
First Annual Meeting of Young Bulgarian Mathematicians
The International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia (ICMS-Sofia) invites you to attend the First Annual Meeting of Young Bulgarian Mathematicians.
The event will be held online on May 19 – 20, 2021.
This meeting is the first inaugural event of a series of annual meetings ICMS initiates. The series, which commemorates the brightest Bulgarian holiday the Day of Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture and the Slavоnic Alphabet May 24, has as its main objective bringing together young Bulgarian mathematicians working all over the world.
To view the preliminary programme, titles and abstracts of the talks, please follow the link: https://icms.bg/first-annual-m
On May 19, 2021, a special round table is organised. The main purpose is to discuss the opportunities for professional development of young Bulgarian mathematicians in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and leading Bulgarian universities.
Expression of interest (Postdoc positions possible in Coding Theory)
The department “Mathematical Foundations of Informatics” (MFI) of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences welcomes expression of interest by postdoctoral researchers, offering to host highly motivated mathematicians and computer scientists, who wish to apply for a Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship or a National Scientific Program “P. Beron” Fellowship. Successful candidates will be affiliated with the International Center for Mathematical Sciences, Sofia (ICMS-Sofia), which is part of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics.
The main activities of MFI are research, applications and training in coding theory, combinatorics, computer algebra, and theoretical computer science. The research group supports its activities with project-based funding, both from state and European funding mechanisms. It is recipient of several grants from the Bulgarian National Science Fund and different European operational and framework programmes, as well as COST actions.
MFI has excellent gender balance and experience distribution and maintains a diverse, inclusive and dynamic work environment, focused on pure and applied research.
MFI has carried out research, innovation and expert activities in the different fields, as the current research priorities of the department are optimal codes, bounds for codes and designs in polynomials metric spaces, cryptography, combinatorics and finite geometries.
Optimal Codes
Error-correcting codes have practical applications in many spheres of life such as information technology, communications, control systems, etc. In a series of papers starting from late 70’s a number of important properties of optimal linear codes were proved leading to classification results for both binary and q-ary cases. Apart from pure mathematical results specialized software was developed to strengthen the research capabilities in the field. The investigations in the field continue with new constructions and nonexistence results are proved in different cases, ensuring further classification. Recent projects develop tools created by the team initially for investigations of optimal codes for use in combinatorics and cryptography. The research in this area will be supervised by Prof. Iliya Bouyukliev. (more…)
The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics offers a Postdoc position in the field of Complex geometry
The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences offers a 6-month Postdoc position in Sofia, Bulgaria, with a possibility for extension in the next two years. The candidate will spend 2 semesters in the International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia (ICMS-Sofia), which is affiliated with the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and 2 semesters in the Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami (IMSA), and will work in the field of Complex geometry.
The position is partially funded by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science under the National Program “Young Scientists and Postdoctoral candidates”.
