ICMS Seminar

Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, BAS Akad.G.Bonchev St, bl. 8, 1113, Sofia

Time and place: Tuesday, May 12-th, 13:00, room 403 IMI-BAS. Lecturer: Ina Petkova (Darmouth College) Title: Khovanov homology and Lagrangian cobordisms Abstract: We provide a partial answer to a question of Ekholm, Honda, and Kalman about the relationship between Khovanov homology and decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms. We also utilize previously defined filtered invariants to give a family of obstructions to decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms from Khovanov homology. Joint with Gage Martin and Zachary Winkeler. More information can be found on the seminar's web-page: https://icms.bg/khovanov-homology-and-lagrangian-cobordisms-icms-seminar-talk-by-ina-petkova/ https://icms.bg/category/icms-seminar/

National Seminar on Probability and Statistics

Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, BAS Akad.G.Bonchev St, bl. 8, 1113, Sofia

The next meeting of the National Seminar on Probability and Statistics will be held on May 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in Room 503 of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. A talk on: Random Flights and Anomalous Diffusion: A non-Markovian Take on Lorentz Processes will be delivered by Lorenzo Facciaroni (Sapienza University of Rome). Abstract: A Lorentz process is a model for the motion of a particle among randomly located scatterers, also known as obstacles. It was originally used to describe the transport of electrons through a conductor. In the classical setting, when the scatterers are distributed according to a Poisson point process, the deterministic dynamics of elastic collisions can be approximated, under the Boltzmann-Grad scaling limit, by a Markovian random flight. The [...]

National Seminar on Probability and Statistics

Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, BAS Akad.G.Bonchev St, bl. 8, 1113, Sofia

The next meeting of the National Seminar on Probability and Statistics will be held on May 13, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in Room 503 of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. A talk on: Some Properties of Exponential Functionals of Continuous Gaussian Processes will be delivered by José Alfredo López-Mimbela (Center for Research in Mathematics Guanajuato, Mexico). Abstract: Exponential functionals of random processes are mathematical expressions that typically involve integrating the exponential of a random process over time. These functionals play a significant role in various areas of mathematics and applied sciences, including probability theory, statistical mechanics, and financial mathematics. In this talk, we discuss some properties of exponential functionals associated with continuous Gaussian processes. The discussion centers on obtaining useful bounds for their [...]

Digital Culture Seminar

Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, BAS Akad.G.Bonchev St, bl. 8, 1113, Sofia

The next meeting of the Digital Culture Seminar will be held on May 19, 2026 (Tuesday) at 10:00 a.m. in Room 256 of IMI - BAS. A talk on: Competing Conceptions of AGI will be delivered by Pei Wang (Temple University, USA), Edior-in-Chief of the Journal of Artificial General Intelligence. Abstract: While the term "Artificial General Intelligence" (AGI) has been used to identify a research field for 20 years, a consensus on its goal remains controversial. These divergent interpretations are not merely philosophical, as they lead to fundamentally different research agendas and engineering methodologies. In this talk, the NARS (Non-Axiomatic Reasoning System) project is introduced, with an outline of its assumptions, representations, inference rules, and working process. NARS offers a fundamentally different vision of [...]
