ICMS Colloquium: talk by Prof. Vladimir Tonchev

The International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia (ICMS-Sofia) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences presents ICMS Colloquium May 17, 2022, 2:00 pm (EEST, UTC+3), IMI-BAS, Hall 403 Vladimir D. Tonchev, Michigan Technological University Coding Theory, Combinatorial Designs, and Finite Geometry Abstract. Error-correcting codes are used to protect data from random errors in satellite and wireless communication systems, audio and video recording devices, and data storage devices. A large class of codes with a wide range of applications are based on finite geometry. The most notable example of such codes are the Reed-Muller codes that are being used in deep space and mobile communications. The subject of this talk is a class of codes based on combinatorial designs. These combinatorial codes possess remarkable error-correction [...]

ICMS Seminar: lecture by Vesselin Dimitrov

ICMS Seminar September 14, 2021, 4:30-5:30 pm (UCT+3), Broadcasted through Zoom The congruence property in two-dimensional rational conformal field theory, revisited Speaker: Vesselin Dimitrov, University of Toronto   Abstract:  In a joint work with Frank Calegari and Yunqing Tang, we use methods from transcendental number theory to prove a conjecture that goes back to Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer, in a special case, and generalized by Mason to the following form: A vector-valued modular form on SL(2,Z) whose components have q-expansions with bounded denominators are exactly the ones for which the underlying representation of SL(2,Z) has a finite image with kernel containing the congruence subgroup of matrices reducing to the identity modulo some positive integer N. In this talk, I will outline the basic ideas of [...]

ICMS-IMSA Working Seminar

ICMS-IMSA Working Seminar August 20, 2021 ICMS, Room 403, 4:30-6:30 pm, Broadcasted trough Zoom Title: On determinantal cubic hypersurfaces (after Iliev-Manivel, Beauville,...) Speaker: Prof. R. Mboro IMSA, ICMS, 4:30-5:30 pm Abstract: We give an account of the problem of writing an equation of a cubic (or other degree) hypersurface X as a (kind of) determinant of a matrix with homogeneous entries. Expressing the equation of X as a determinant is equivalent to produce an arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle on X. The talk will focus on the cases of cubic hypersurfaces of dimension at most 8. Title: Quantum representations of fundamental groups of curves with infinite image Speaker: Prof. R. Aguilar IMSA, ICMS, 5:30-6:30 pm Abstract: We will report on some results due to Koberda-Santharoubane [...]
