VIVA Cognita Platform

The VIVA Cognita platform is a partnership project of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, the Union of Bulgarian Mathematicians and VIVACOM.

The objectives of the project are:

Creating a web platform and deploying technology to enable the development and implementation of a variety of educational initiatives without imposing constraints on the form or content.

Creating and implementing an approach to motivate and enable platform users to implement easily and with good quality their ideas for educational initiatives with the help of web technologies.

Work on the platform started in the middle of 2014. By the end of the year the main functionalities were implemented, that allowed the development of a virtual community. In December 2014, the first major imitiative was held – the online competition VIVA Mathematics with a Computer, which has become a traditional one and is gaining growing popularity.

In mid-2015, the first initiative based entirely on the idea of ​​community members was created – the online version of the book “555 Geometry Problems”. In 2016 the introduction of a functional module allowing to conduct online courses was implemented and the optimization of the online competition module was completed.

In 2016-2017, six initiatives were created and carried out by community members, with a particular interest towards the online courses for teacher professional development and the unique initiative “Mathematics – Fun and Interesting”. An online course “Introduction to Probability and Statistics” was carried out in 2017, having in mind the poor coverage of these topics in the curricula of Bulgarian schools.

Results:

• 10045 registered users as of October 2017.
• Over 400,000 unique site visits.
• 1,900,000 visited pages of the platform.
• Over 50 hours of original video content.
• 337,770 minutes and 33,389 reviews of video content.
