Introductory Toric Geometry
First part of a mini-course by
Peter Petrov
Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
This is the first part, consisting of four lectures, of a mini-course in which the combinatorial geometry related to toric varieties will be introduced. It will be developed to define and express properties of toric varieties and toric morphisms, and to investigate the geometry of the orbits by the torus action, in particular the orbit decomposition. Next, toric divisors, invertible and reflexive
sheaves on toric variety and their groups will be introduced and studied.
The notions and theorems will be illustrated by typical examples. One of the goals of this first part is to accumulate enough knowledge on which the second part of the course could be based. This mini-course will be available for PhD students and postdocs in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, or theoretical physics, who have studied basic courses in algebra and algebraic geometry. Some beginning knowledge of topology could be useful as well. Nevertheless, everything needed will be carefully explained.
