SUMMARY:ICMS Distinguished Lecture Series in Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics - Ivan Dimitrov\, Lecture 5
DESCRIPTION:ICMS Distinguished Lecture series in Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics\nDate and place: \nMay 19 and 21\, 2026 (15:00–16:00 Sofia time) and June 1\, 3 and 5\, 2026 (16:00–17:00 Sofia time)\, Room 403\, IMI – BAS \nLecturer: \nIvan Dimitrov (Queen’s University\, Canada) \nTitle:\n \nRoot systems\, generalizations and applications\nRoot systems were introduced by Wilhelm Killing in 1889 as a tool for classifying Lie algebras. Since then\, they have become ubiquitous\, appearing in various contexts in seemingly unrelated areas of Mathematics. In this lecture series\, Ivan Dimitrov introduces and studies root systems and defines a generalization of root systems. He explains how this more general structure applies to various problems\, e.g. hyperplane arrangements. Finally\, he introduces and studies inversion sets of roots. The exposition is mostly self-contained\, assuming Linear algebra and some Group theory background. \nhttps://icms.bg/event/root-systems-ivan-dimitrov-lecture-series/

SUMMARY:Joint seminar of ICMS and AGT
DESCRIPTION:Date and time: Tuesday\, June 2-nd\, 2026\, 13:00\, room 403 IMI-BAS \nLecturer: Bogdan Djordjevic\, (Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences\, visitor at ICMS\, IMI-BAS) \nTitle: Application of the Laplace transform for evaluating sums of hyperharmonic-like series in Banach algebras and modules \nAbstract: In this talk it will be shown how the Laplace transform (in respective Banach spaces) can be utilized for evaluating sums of Banach-space-valued series. We demonstrate the technique on various abstract generalizations of the numerical hyperharmonic series\, including noncommutative setting and non-invertible setting. As an application\, we obtain new necessary consistency condition for the Sylvester equation \(\)ax-xb=c[\latex].

SUMMARY:Digital Culture Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the Digital Culture Seminar \nwill be held on May 26\, 2026 (Tuesday) at 10:00 a.m. in Room 278 of IMI – BAS. \nA talk on: \nLogics for Strategic Reasoning about Socially Interacting Rational Agents\nwill be delivered by Valentin Goranko\, Stockholm University\, Sweden. \nAbstract: An important aspect of socially interacting rational agents are the strategic abilities of individual agents and groups (coalitions) of agents to guarantee the achievement of their desired goals\, while acting and interacting within an entire society of agents. Several logical systems have been proposed for formalising and capturing such reasoning were introduced the early 2000s\, starting with the Coalition Logic (CL)\, the Alternating Time Temporal Logic (ATL)\, and some extensions of these. \nCoalition Logic provides a natural\, but rather restricted perspective: the agents in the proponent coalition are viewed as acting in full cooperation with each other but in complete opposition to all agents outside of the coalition\, which are thus treated as adversaries. The Alternating Time Temporal Logic extends Coalition Logic with temporal operators allowing for expressing long-term temporised goals. \nThe strategic interaction in real societies is much more complex\, usually involving various patterns combining cooperation and competition. To capture these\, more expressive and versatile logical frameworks are needed. \nIn this talk I will give a brief overview of some of these logics and will illustrate their use with some examples. \nZoom link:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/82219689652?pwd=VbWffI8RD4aPYC8TaNrasukEW7uePV.1

SUMMARY:National Seminar on Probability and Statistics
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the \nNational Seminar on Probability and Statistics\n \nwill be held on May 20\, 2026\, at 2:00 p.m. in Room 503 of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. \nA talk on: \nFinite time blowup and existence of global solutions of a semi-linear stochastic partial differential equation with fractional noise\nwill be delivered by \nEkaterina Todorova Kolkovska (Center for Research in Mathematics Guanajuato\, Mexico). \nAbstract: We consider a stochastic partial differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H greater or equal to 1/2 on a bounded domain with smooth boundary and Dirichlet boundary conditions. By means of an associated random partial differential equation\, lower and upper bounds for the blowup time of the solution are given. Sufficient conditions for blowup in finite time and for the existence of a global solution are deduced in terms of the parameters of the equation. For the case H = 1/2 (i.e. for Brownian motion) estimates for the probability of blowup in finite time are given in terms of the laws of exponential functionals of Brownian motion. \nMore information about the talk can be found on the seminar website:\nhttp://www.math.bas.bg/~statlab/NSPS/

SUMMARY:First International Conference “Responsible Creation of Artificial General Intelligence”
DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics is pleased to announce RC-AGI 2026. This is an international conference jointly organized by our institute and the South-West University “Neofit Rilski”. \n\nConference objectives: \nMankind is on the verge of its most important discovery\, one that will fundamentally change our life and future. The creation of AGI is similar to letting the genie out of the bottle. In fairy tales there is usually only one bottle and the question is whether to open it or not. With AGI the opening the bottle is inevitable because many researchers and international companies are working on its creation and no one can stop or prohibit them from creating it. Furthermore\, when we are about to let the AGI genie out of the bottle\, we can choose between many bottles in which different genies reside. It would be irresponsible to simply open a random bottle and release some genie without caring about the goals which that genie will pursue. The least we should want is to ensure that the genie will obey us\, because otherwise we will face catastrophic consequences. \n\nWebsite: https://dobrev.com/agi/ \n\nKey Topics: \n· Definition of AGI: Is AGI a computer program and if yes\, what are the characteristics of that program? \n· Is there any difference between AGI and Superintelligence? Will we first create intelligence that is at a human level and only after time will incomparably greater intelligence appear? \n· How will the world look like when AGI is here?

SUMMARY:ICMS Distinguished Lecture series in Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics - Ivan Dimitrov\, Lecture 1

SUMMARY:Digital Culture Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the Digital Culture Seminar \nwill be held on May 19\, 2026 (Tuesday) at 10:00 a.m. in Room 256 of IMI – BAS. \nA talk on: \nCompeting Conceptions of AGI\nwill be delivered by Pei Wang (Temple University\, USA)\, Edior-in-Chief of the Journal of Artificial General Intelligence. \nAbstract: While the term “Artificial General Intelligence” (AGI) has been used to identify a research field for 20 years\, a consensus on its goal remains controversial. These divergent interpretations are not merely philosophical\, as they lead to fundamentally different research agendas and engineering methodologies. In this talk\, the NARS (Non-Axiomatic Reasoning System) project is introduced\, with an outline of its assumptions\, representations\, inference rules\, and working process. NARS offers a fundamentally different vision of AGI than the one implied by today’s LLMs.

SUMMARY:National Seminar on Probability and Statistics
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the \nNational Seminar on Probability and Statistics\n \nwill be held on May 13\, 2026\, at 2:00 p.m. in Room 503 of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. \nA talk on: \nSome Properties of Exponential Functionals of Continuous Gaussian Processes\nwill be delivered by \nJosé Alfredo López-Mimbela (Center for Research in Mathematics Guanajuato\, Mexico). \nAbstract: Exponential functionals of random processes are mathematical expressions that typically involve integrating the exponential of a random process over time. These functionals play a significant role in various areas of mathematics and applied sciences\, including probability theory\, statistical mechanics\, and financial mathematics. In this talk\, we discuss some properties of exponential functionals associated with continuous Gaussian processes. The discussion centers on obtaining useful bounds for their cumulative distribution functions\, with particular emphasis on Brownian motion and fractional Brownian motion. \nMore information about the talk can be found on the seminar website:\nhttp://www.math.bas.bg/~statlab/NSPS/

SUMMARY:National Seminar on Probability and Statistics
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the \nNational Seminar on Probability and Statistics\n \nwill be held on May 12\, 2026\, at 2:00 p.m. in Room 503 of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. \nA talk on: \nRandom Flights and Anomalous Diffusion: A non-Markovian Take on Lorentz Processes\nwill be delivered by \nLorenzo Facciaroni (Sapienza University of Rome). \nAbstract: A Lorentz process is a model for the motion of a particle among randomly located scatterers\, also known as obstacles. It was originally used to describe the transport of electrons through a conductor. In the classical setting\, when the scatterers are distributed according to a Poisson point process\, the deterministic dynamics of elastic collisions can be approximated\, under the Boltzmann-Grad scaling limit\, by a Markovian random flight. The density of this limiting process is governed by the Boltzmann equation. Passing further to the hydrodynamic limit\, one recovers Brownian motion as the macroscopic description of the particle’s position. In this work\, we introduce a new class of point processes that generalizes the Poisson process and we investigate the motion of a particle which collides elastically with obstacles distributed according to this distribution. Unlike the classical case\, the corresponding limiting random flight process is no longer Markovian. Instead\, it exhibits memory effects that lead to superdiffusive behavior. At the macroscopic level\, the particle’s position converges to a continuous superdiffusive process. Within this framework\, we derive a non-local analogue of the Boltzmann equation governing the non-Markovian random flight. Moreover\, we show that the density of the superdiffusive scaling limit satisfies a fractional heat equation\, reflecting the anomalous transport induced by the underlying correlations. \nKeywords: Lorentz process · Boltzmann-Grad limit · Feller semigroups. \nReferences:\n1. SUMMARY:Seminar in Operations Research\, Probability and Statistics
DESCRIPTION:On April 28\, 2026 (Tuesday) at 2:00 pm in room 503 of IMI-BAS \nMihail Mukov (Intellics Engineering) \nwill give a talk at the Operations Research\, Probability and Statistics Seminar on: \nModeling Lifting Systems in Waste Collection\n. \nAbstract: \nThis presentation considers the problem of estimating the mass of waste emptied from individual containers by a garbage truck equipped with standard lifting forks for both large 1100-liter containers and smaller waste bins.\nThe main objective is to develop a low-cost measurement system that can be applied to a wide range of truck configurations with only minimal hardware modification.\nThe system combines an oil pressure sensor installed in the hydraulic circuit and a standard smartphone inertial measurement unit fixed on the lifting arm.\nThe pressure sensor provides a measure for determining the lifting force\, while the accelerometer and gyroscope are used to estimate the motion of the lifting arm. From these measurements and a calibrated model\, the dumped waste is determined.\nThe main focus of the presentation is the physical and mathematical structure of the method. This includes:\n\nVirtual reorientation of the sensor to the truck coordinate system.\nPreprocessing of raw sensor data.\nRemoving gyroscope drift.\nIntegration of angular velocity to obtain absolute rotation angle.\nPhysical model with unknown parameters\, formulated in a form suitable for regression-based calibration.\nGradient descent approach\, used for automatic identification of optimal measurement position.\nLinear approximation of the exponential dependence of oil viscosity on temperature\, allowing the system to remain usable at low winter temperatures.\n\nThe lecture is based on a joint research with Damyan Kalaglarsky (Intellics Eng.)  and Prof. Dsc. Ognyan Kounchev (IMI-BAS).\nEveryone interested in the topic is cordially invited to participate.

SUMMARY:Algebra and Logic Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the Algebra and Logic Seminar will take place on April 24\, 2026 (Friday) at 1:00 pm (UTC+3) in Room 578 and online via Zoom. \nA talk on: \nSets preserved by a large subgroup of the special linear group\nwill be delivered by \nKaloyan Slavov (Medical University\, Sofia).\nAbstract. The classical Kakeya problem in Euclidean space asks how “small” a set can be if it contains a unit line segment in every direction. More generally\, packing sets contain all images of a given set under a collection of transformations. Finite field analogues offer a combinatorial and algebraic perspective and motivate our work. \nWe study sets \(E\) in the affine plane over a finite field that are invariant under a large subgroup \(R\) of \(SL_2\). We prove that if \(|R|>c|E|^{3/2}\)\, then \(E\) must be contained in a line. The exponent \(3/2\) is sharp. We conclude with a remark on a related phenomenon in the Euclidean setting. This is joint work with Thang Pham and Le Quang-Hung. \nLink to the zoom meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88300991142?pwd=wGYl7VaD9RZKEm99sKzHMzl3bYCv3J.1\nEverybody is invited. \nAlgebra and Logic Department\, IMI – BAS\nhttp://www.math.bas.bg/algebra/seminarAiL/\n============================== =====================

SUMMARY:National Seminar on Probability and Statistics
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the \nNational Seminar on Probability and Statistics\n \nwill be held on April 21\, 2026\, at 2:00 p.m. in Room 503 of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. \nA talk on: \nHow long does it take to train an Elephant Random Walk\nwill be delivered by \nZheng Fang (University of Zurich). \nAbstract: We study how conditioning on the first \(k\) steps\, which we think of as training\, affects the long-term behavior of the Elephant Random Walk. When the elephant is conditioned to be at position \(k\) at time \(k\)\, the first return time to the origin scales as \(k^{(4−4p)⁄(3−4p)}\) in the diffusive regime\, and grows exponentially in the critical regime. We loosely interpret this as a measurement of the rate at which the elephant forgets its training. \nMore information about the talk can be found on the seminar website:\nhttp://www.math.bas.bg/~statlab/NSPS/
