\nДоклад на тема: \nSingular perturbation theory in epidemic modelling\nще изнесе Sara Sottile (University of Bologna\, Italy). \nРезюме: In real world scenarios\, the natural phenomena usually evolve on time scales differing by various orders of magnitude. Such separation in time-scales can be found\, for example\, in the field of chemical oscillations [1]\, neuroscience [2]\, ecology [3] or opinion/information spreading [4]. In this context\, Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory (GSPT) is a powerful analytical technique which fully exploits the underlying time-scale separation. Epidemiological models also provide a natural fit for these dynamics. Consider\, for instance\, models that incorporate information dynamics [5\, 6]\, host-vector interactions [7\, 8]\, or even those that account for immunity loss and reinfection processes\, which occur over extended time scales [9]. This seminar will introduce the fundamental concepts of Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory (GSPT) and explore its applications in epidemiology\, using various tools and techniques to illustrate the range of its potential.
\nДоклад на тема: \nSome mathematical aspects of simulation modeling of physiological processes in plants\nще изнесе Dr. Alex Topaj (Bureau Hyperborea Ltd). \nРезюме: The contribution presents the author’s experience of using mathematical methods to describe plant physiology processes in applied crop models. In contrast to the simplified data-based empirical approach\, the mechanistic description of plant vital processes in theory allows us to obtain new knowledge and to develop the universal crop models with parameters having physical meaning. Such explanatory models\, in addition to the traditional cause-and-effect method (the flow-balance approach\, leading to systems of differential or difference equations)\, can also successfully apply the alternative mathematical apparatus. The following examples of such use will be briefly presented: \n1) Organogenesis and phenological development of cereals. Dry matter distribution in the «shoot-root-ear» system as an optimal control problem of dynamic resource allocation.\n2) Stomatal Regulation. The functional balance between photosynthesis and transpiration under water stress.\n3) Biological nitrogen fixation of legumes. The interaction of active intellectual agents (plant and rhizobia) as an evolutionary game.\n

\nДоклад на тема: \nMultiscale Leading Edge and Bulk Dynamics for Tumour Invasion in Fibrous Environment\nще изнесе Dr. Dumitru Trucu (University of Dundee\, Шотландия). \nРезюме: Despite all recent in vivo\, in vitro\, and in silico advances\, the understanding of the genuine biologically multiscale process of solid tumour invasion remains one of the greatest open questions for scientific community. In this talk we present novel mathematical multiscale moving boundary modelling and structural analytical approaches for tumour invasion. Specifically\, we focus on characterising mathematically key aspects of the dynamic interactions that the migratory cancer cells population and the accompanying matrix degrading enzymes (MDEs) have with the extracellular matrix (ECM) components\, and in particular with the ECM fibres. These are complex interactions enabled by a series of integrated multiscale systems\, which are at least two-scale in nature and share (and contribute to) the same tumour macro-dynamics (i.e.\, tissue-scale dynamics) but have independent-in-nature micro-dynamics (i.e.\, cell-scale dynamics). For instance\, on the bulk of the tumour\, of major interest is the dynamics of fibres degradation and structural realignment occurring at micro-scale as well as the immediate impact that this continuously changing field of oriented ECM fibres has over the tumour macro-dynamics. On the other hand\, the cell-scale proteolytic micro-dynamics occurring at the tumour invasive edge interacts with the peritumoural ECM fibres through the molecular fluxes of MDEs. This interfacial cell-scale interaction not only results in changes in the micro-scale structural distribution of peritumoural ECM fibres but also influences directly the changes of the overall tumour morphology. \nThe new mathematical multiscale modelling framework presented here aims to address the precise biological multiscale nature of these interactions between the cancer cell population and the surrounding fibrous environment during solid tumour invasion. This involves an appropriately derived novel 2D & 3D multiscale moving boundary modelling framework as well as state-of-the-art multiscale computational approaches. Furthermore\, this research paves the way for new multiscale analysis research avenues that builds on the novel concept of three-scale convergence that I established and introduced a while ago.\n

SUMMARY:Семинар на секция ММЧА
DESCRIPTION:Поредната сбирка на семинара на секция\n\nМатематическо моделиране и числен анализ\n\nще се състои на 24.11.2025 г.\, понеделник\, от 14:00 часа в зала 503 на Института по математика и информатика.\n\nДоклад на тема\n \nModelling financial crisis propagation as an epidemic on multiplex networks\n\nще изнесе\n\nд-р Малвина Божидарова (Russell Group Limited)\n\nРезюме: We propose a novel framework for modelling the spread of financial crises in complex networks\, combining financial data\, Extreme Value Theory and an epidemiological transmission model. We accommodate two key aspects of contagion modelling: fundamentals-based contagion\, where the transmission is due to direct financial linkages\, and pure contagion\, where a crisis might trigger additional crises due to global effects. We use stock price\, geographical location and economic sector data for a set of companies to construct multiplex networks of four layers\, on which a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered transmission model is defined\, in order to model the spread of financial shocks between companies by accounting for their interconnected nature. By utilizing stock price data for the 2008 and 2020 financial crises\, we investigate and assess the effectiveness of our model in forecasting the propagation of financial shocks through the network\, where a shock is detected by measuring stock price volatility. The results suggest that the proposed framework is effective in predicting the spread of financial crises. Our findings demonstrate the significance of each layer of the multiplex network structure\, which differentiates between various transmission pathways\, for predicting the number of affected companies\, as well as for company-\, sector- or location-specific predictions.
