The mirror symmetry phenomenon was discovered by string theorists more than thirty years ago as an equivalence of two physical theories associated with very different geometries. The categorical point of view on this remarkable conjecture was famously introduced by M. Kontsevich in his 1994 ICM talk. As it became clear over time\, homological mirror symmetry provides new approaches to many topics in symplectic and algebraic geometry. In these two talks\, I will present a brief overview of the conjecture as well as some results inspired by mirror symmetry and obtained in joint work with L. Katzarkov about classical problems on discriminants and singularity theory.

\n\nZoom link:\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83740034721?pwd=VnBtcVpGUktscHQ4a09jZkNZTURyZz09\n\nAbstract: This talk is intended as a very gentle introduction to the classical subject of enumerative geometry concerned with problems of counting algebraic curves with prescribed properties. In the realm of classical planimetry\, we know that there exists a single circle passing through a collection of three points\, provided that these points are generic. Here “generic” simply means that the points are not collinear\, i.e. don’t belong to the same line but could refer to some other open condition in a different context; the number of points is just right for a problem to be well-stated — there are infinitely many circles passing through any two points and a collection of four points lying on a circle is special. A less trivial example\, which will be considered in detail\, is the question “How many rational cubic curves on the plane pass through a generic collection of eight points?”. “Rational” here means that a curve has a parametrization by rational functions\, and “cubic” refers to a curve defined as a zero locus of a degree three polynomial. The number of points is again chosen just right so that one may expect a non-trivial answer. In the case of real algebraic geometry\, the number of cubics may vary depending on the position of the eight generic points\, and a priori it is even not clear if such curves exist for all configurations. On the other hand\, if we state the same problem over complex numbers the answer becomes definite and independent of the position of the generic points. By an elegant\, yet quite elementary\, topological reasoning we will deduce that this answer is 12. Adapting the same argument in the real case\, we will see that real rational cubics should be counted with signs and the result of this new count becomes a definite -8\, proving in particular that for any generic configuration of eight points on the real plane\, there exist at least eight rational real cubics passing through them.

Quantum circuit complexity for light polarisation or complexity with no complex numbers \nДопълнителна информация: https://icms.bg/quantum-circuit-complexity-for-light-polarisation-or-complexity-with-no-complex-number-talk-by-jean-pierre-gazeau/ \nРезюме. I will present a form of quantum circuit complexity that extends to open systems. To illustrate the methodology\, I focus on a basic model where the Hilbert space of states is represented by the Euclidean plane. Specifically\, the investigation is about the dynamics of mixed quantum states as they undergo interactions with a sequence of gates. The approach involves the analysis of sequences of density matrices. Each density matrix evolves within the framework of a Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) process during the time interval between consecutive gates. Notably\, when considering an upper limit for the cost function\, the optimal number of gates follows a power-law relationship.

A prototypical example of such refinement arises in the tropical curve counting from replacing Mikhalkin multiplicities\, corresponding to counting complex curves\, with Block-Goettsche multiplicities. I will speak about the invariance of this count and its various interpretations.

в зала 403 и онлайн в Zoom: \nДоклад на тема \nLinear embeddings of complex Grassmannians\n\nще изнесе Иван Пенков\, Constructor University Bremen. \n\nZoom link:\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83740034721?pwd=VnBtcVpGUktscHQ4a09jZkNZTURyZz09\n\nAbstract: A linear embedding of Grassmannians\, one of which could possibly be isotropic\, is an embedding which respects the generators of Picard groups. Several years ago A.S. Tikhomirov and I classified such embeddings when both Grassmannians are simultaneously usual Grassmannians or isotropic Grassmannians of the same type(orthogonal or symplectic). In this talk I will discuss also the mixed case. A classification as above has an application to the classification of infinite-dimensional linear ind-Grassmannians\, and I shall  briefly explain this at the end of the talk.

DESCRIPTION:Дата: 12.03.2024 г.\, 14:00 ч. \nМясто: Зала 403\, ИМИ – БАН \nДокладчик: Morgan Brown  (University of Miami) \nДоклад: The Cox ring perspective on birational geometry \nДопълнителна информация: https://icms.bg/the-cox-ring-perspective-in-birational-geometry-talk-by-morgan-brown/ \nРезюме. The Mori program for birational classification of algebraic varieties attempts to classify algebraic varieties by producing canonical models\, polarized by the canonical class. This is accomplished through a series of algebraic surgery operations\, such as flips\, flops\, and divisorial contractions. A complementary viewpoint is that of the total coordinate ring or Cox ring. Here birational maps are understood by looking at the totality of all linear series on the variety\, endowed with a ring structure directly analogous to that of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a projective variety. I will give an overview of how Cox rings can help clarify many phenomena in birational geometry.

Recently Moraga and Svaldi proved a conjecture of Shokoruv\, characterizing in the relative case toroidal morphisms as those which admit divisors with many components relative to the Picard rank. I will discuss the global version\, proved in previous joint work with McKernan\, Svaldi and Zong. The proof relies on characterizing the singularity type of the Cox ring\, giving another example of the use of these invariants in birational geometry.

в зала 403: \nДоклад на тема \nEllipsoid superpotentials: obstructing symplectic embeddings by singular algebraic curves\n\nще изнесе Григори Михалкин\, Женевски университет. \n\n\nAbstract: How singular can be a local branch of a plane algebraic curve of a given degree d? A remarkable series of real algebraic curves was constructed by Stepan Orevkov. It is based on even-indexed numbers in the Fibonacci series: a degree 5 curve with a 13/2 cusp\, a degree 13 curve with a 34/5-cusp\, and so on. We discuss this and other series of algebraic curves in the context of the problem of symplectic packing of an ellipsoid into a ball\, with the answer given by the spectacular Fibonacci staircase of McDuff and Schlenk. The aspect ratio a>1 of the ellipsoid can be viewed as a real parameter for a certain enumerative superpotential function\, which is mostly locally constant\, but jumps at certain specific rational values (responsible for the aspects of cusp singularities). Based on joint work with Kyler Siegel.\n\nТова заседание на семинара няма да се излъчва в Zoom.

\n\n\nAbstract: In order to classify objects in singularity theory and algebraic geometry\, we define invariants associated to varieties or germs of singularities and hope to have enough tools to compute them easily. From classical projective duality\, for any variety \(X\)\, we can define a dual variety \(X∗\) and we call the class of \(X\) the degree of \(X∗\). Plücker’s formula allows one to compute this class for plane curves with a certain set of nodes\, cusps and tacnodes.\nWe will start our talk by recalling the general Bézout theorem and then present the Plücker-Teissier formula\, which generalises Plücker’s formula to hypersurfaces\, and we will sketch a method to generalise the approach to its proof to general complete intersections.\n\nZoom link:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83740034721?pwd=VnBtcVpGUktscHQ4a09jZkNZTURyZz09

\n\n\n\nAbstract: Classical amoebas serve as a tool to study algebraic varieties and as one of the entry points to tropical geometry. The original definition involves a logarithmic projection of a subvariety of a complex algebraic torus\, which can be interpreted as forgetting the phase\, i.e. the arguments of complex numbers. In group-theoretic terms\, this projection map may be thought of as passing to the quotient by the maximal compact subgroup. Suppose one replaces the algebraic torus with a complex three-dimensional matrix group. In that case\, the analogous projection naturally has a three-dimensional hyperbolic space as its target\, and it still makes sense to consider images\, i.e. hyperbolic amoebas\, of complex algebraic varieties under this map. I will review some of the basic properties of hyperbolic amoebas\, extending a fascinating interplay between complex and hyperbolic geometries.Based on joint work with Grigory Mikhalkin. \n\n\nZoom link:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83740034721?pwd=VnBtcVpGUktscHQ4a09jZkNZTURyZz09

P-adic L-functions and the geometry of the Eigencurve \nДопълнителна информация: https://icms.bg/p-adic-l-functions-and-the-geometry-of-the-eigencurve-talk-by-mladen-dimitrov/ \nРезюме. For centuries\, understanding special values of L-functions has been a significant research topic in number theory. Their study has been central to many celebrated pieces of mathematics\, from Dirichlet’s theorem on primes in arithmetic progressions and the class number formula to the Riemann hypothesis and the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture\, two of the famous millennium problems. \nThe BSD conjecture predicts that the Mordell–Weil rank of an elliptic curve is given by the order of vanishing of its L-function the central point. Iwasawa theory\, in turn\, seeks to relate the arithmetic over the p-adic cyclotomic extension with the behavior of a p-adic analytic L-function\, and various recent works on the BSD conjecture rely crucially on such p-adic methods. \nAn amazing feature of the p-adic L-functions is their ability to live in families\, thus their laws are governed by the geometry of p-adic eigenvarieties. In this lecture we will illustrate this philosophy through examples coming from classical modular forms and the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve.

The Chinese remainder theorem states that given coprime integers \(p_1\, …\, p_n\) and integers \(a_1\, …\, a_n\)\, we can always find an integer \(m\) such that \(m \equiv a_i \mbox{ mod } p_i\) for all \(i\). Similarly given distinct numbers \(x_1\,…\, x_n\) and \(y_1\, …\, y_n\) we can find a polynomial \(f\) such that \(f(x_i)=y_i\). These statements are two instances of strong approximation for the affine line (over the integers \(\mathbb{Z}\) and the polynomials \(k[x]\) over a field \(k\)). In this talk we will consider when an analogue of this holds for special subsets of \(\mathbb{Z}\) and \(k[x]\)\, such as squarefree integers or polynomials without simple roots\, and different varieties. We give a precise description for which subsets this holds on a toric variety.

In this talk\, we demonstrate that essential self-adjointness can be restored by symmetrically weighting the momentum operator with a positive bounded function that approximates the indicator function of the given interval. This weighted momentum operator arises naturally from a similarly weighted classical momentum through the Weyl-Heisenberg covariant integral quantization of functions or distributions. \nReference:\nF.
Yukawa regulators in electrodynamics: Exact approach to the self-energy and anomalous g-factor \nДопълнителна информация: https://icms.bg/yukawa-regulators-in-electrodynamics-exact-approach-to-the-self-energy-and-anomalous-g-factor-icms-seminar-talk-by-miroslav-georgiev/ \nРезюме. In the present talk\, we will discuss the prospect of electrodynamics in quantifying the self-interaction of a non-composite charged particle. We will demonstrate that under the consideration of unique to the particle Yukawa cut-offs the radial singularity in corresponding electromagnetic field potentials’ is removed allowing the classical theory to admit exact solutions for the particle’s self-energy and anomalous g-factor. Highly accurate results for the electron’s and muon’s anomalous g-factor will be presented\, with calculated values matching the most recent measurements reported in the literature to 0.59 ppt and 60 ppt\, respectively.

\nМясто: Зала 403\, ИМИ – БАН \nДокладчик: Sergey Favorov\, Department of Pure Mathematics\, Kharkov National University\, Ukraine \nДоклад: Fourier quasicrystals and their generalizations\, zeros of Dirichlet series\, other almost periodic objects \nДопълнителна информация: https://icms.bg/fourier-quasicrystals-and-their-generalizations-zeros-of-dirichlet-series-other-almost-periodic-objects-icms-seminar-talk-by-sergey-favorov/ \nРезюме. A complex measure \(\mu\) on a \(d\)-dimensional Euclidean space is a crystalline measure (CM) if it is the temperate distribution\, its distributional Fourier transform \(\hat\mu\) is also a measure\, and supports of \(\mu\) and \(\hat\mu\) are discrete (locally finite); \(\mu\) is a Fourier quasicrystal (FQ) if\, in addition\, \(|\mu|\) and \(|\hat\mu|\) are also temperate distributions. For example\, if \(\mu_0\) is the sum of the unit masses at all points with integer coordinates\, then by Poisson’s formula \(\hat\mu_0=\mu_0\). Hence\, \(\mu_0\) is FQ. \nWe show a theorem of Lev-Olevskii on a sufficient condition for trivialization of FQ. Then we discuss a simple condition for CM to be FQ and present CM that is not FQ. \nWe recall the notion of an almost periodic function\, introduce the notions of almost periodic measures\, distributions\, sets\, and show their connections with CM. In paricular\, we get various uniqueness theorems for FQ. \nFinally\, we show the description of FQ with unit masses as zeros of exponential polynomials due to Olevskii and Ulanovskii\, and discuss some generalizations to zeros of Dirichlet series and to measures in a horizontal strip of finite width.

Affine geometry is sometimes described as “what remains of Euclidean geometry when distances are forgotten”. In this talk\, I will report on a very recent discovery of an affine-invariant notion\, which may be viewed as a distance from a point inside a convex domain to its boundary. This new concept stems from a suggestion of Conan Leung\, who proposed to average the canonical tropical series\, a fundamental notion of tropical optics\, over the manifold of all tropical structures of fixed covolume on the given affine space. Very little of what we (Nikita Kalinin\, Ernesto Lupercio and me) currently know\, as well as necessary preliminaries\, some observations and precise conjectures\, will be covered during the talk\, which mainly serves as an invitation to participate in developing this exciting new topic.

In this talk we will explain the role that the Lie algebras play in the construction of 6-dimensional compact quotient spaces M=G/Γ\, where Γ is a lattice\, endowed with an invariant complex structure with holomorphically trivial canonical bundle. We will use the approach of stable forms in six dimensions to provide a classification of unimodular Lie algebras admitting a complex structure with non-zero closed (3\,0)-form. Some of these spaces can be equipped with balanced Hermitian metrics and they provide invariant solutions of the Hull-Strominger system\, even with non-flat connection on the tangent bundle satisfying the Hermitian-Yang-Mills condition.

Aiming to understand the relation to other “refined invariants”\, and especially their possible interpretation in quantum theory\, we explain how to obtain a quadratic\, A1-version of Donaldson-Thomas invariants from the motivic refinements first introduced in Kontsevich-Soibelman. Following ideas from Behrend\, Bryan and Szendroi\, we provide predictions for these invariants in a few simple examples\, mainly the computation of DT invariants of A3. Our main goal is to draw relationships with the literature\, including works of Levine\, Denef and Loser\, Azouri\, Pepin-Lehaulleur\, Srinivas among others. We begin with a brief introduction to A1-enumerative geometry and in the end\, we pose some further questions on possible extensions of our definitions. This is joint work with Johannes Walcher. We also comment on joint work in progress with Ran Azouri.

DESCRIPTION:Съвместна сбирка на семинара на МЦМН и семинара “Алгебра и Логика” в ИМИ\, София\, ще се проведе идния вторник\, с доклад на Георги Томанов\, както следва.\n\nВторник\, 29-ти април\, 14:00 часа\, зала 403 на ИМИ-БАН.\nГеорги Томанов\, Université Claude Bernard\, Lyon 1.\nGroup action on homogeneous spaces and applications in number theory\n\nAbstract: Many longstanding conjectures and problems in number theory can be reformulated in terms of group actions on homogeneous spaces. This reformulation allows them to be tackled using\, alongside deep methods from algebra and algebraic geometry\, powerful tools from ergodic theory and dynamical systems. An example of the effectiveness of this approach is Margulis’s groundbreaking proof of the Oppenheim conjecture (formulated in 1929) concerning the values of quadratic forms at integer points. \nIn this talk\, aimed at a general audience\, we will describe recent results on the characterization of norm forms—a classical object in algebraic number theory—in terms of their values at integer points. These results answer natural questions and are related to still-open conjectures of Littlewood (from 1930) and of Cassels and Swinnerton-Dyer (from 1955). The proofs rely on studying the actions of maximal tori of algebraic groups on homogeneous spaces of arithmetic origin.

в зала 403 и онлайн в Zoom: \nДоклад на тема \nBinary Quadratic Forms and Conway’s Topographs (Lecture 1 of 3)\n\nще изнесе Nikita Kalinin\, Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology. \n\nСледващите две лекции ще бъдат на 07.05.2025 и 14.05.2025 от 16:00 ч.\n\nAbstract: Binary quadratic forms are as elementary as they are mysterious—much like prime numbers. In 1997\, John Conway introduced topographs\, a powerful geometric tool that provides a geometric visualization of binary quadratic forms and their values. These lectures will explore how topographs\, combined with telescoping summation techniques\, yield elegant formulas — some with intuitive geometric interpretations. For instance\, consider the following result: \nLet \n\(A = \big\{ (x\, y) \mid  x\,y\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^2\, \det(x \ \ y) = 1 \big\}\,\) \nthe set of pairs of lattice vectors in the first quadrant spanning a parallelogram of oriented area 1. Then\, \n\(4 \displaystyle\sum_{(x\,y) \in A} \frac{1}{|x|^2 \cdot |y|^2 \cdot |x+y|^2} = \pi.\) \nLecture Outline \n1. Introduction to Binary Quadratic Forms and Conway’s Topographs\nWe will begin with the basics of binary quadratic forms and their classification\, followed by an introduction to Conway’s topographs—a visual and geometric framework for understanding them. \n2. Class Number Formula and Summation over Topographs\nBuilding on the first lecture\, we will explore the class number formula and how summation identities arise naturally from the structure of topographs. \n3. Evaluation of Lattice Sums via Telescoping over Topographs\nThe final lecture will focus on telescoping techniques\, demonstrating how they can be used to evaluate intricate lattice sums—such as the one above—with geometric meaning. \n\n\nZoom link:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86186281353?pwd=6CARUygJaA3HiTNAt3norZQRFt8fIL.1
