I will discuss a generalization\, due to Dwyer\, Greenlees and Iyengar\, of the notion of a Gorenstein ring from commutative algebra to the algebra of ring spectra. I will illustrate the concept with classical examples from stable homotopy theory as well as more exotic ones coming from derived algebraic geometry\, namely the ring spectra of topological modular forms with level structure. Time permitting\, I will discuss how things generalize equivariantly in the presence of a group action.

Given a convex region C in the plane\, what is the smallest combined width of a finite collection of planks that cover C? What happens in higher dimensions? In the 50s\, Thoger Bang answered this innocent question of Alfred Tarski and opened a box with many deceptively simple-looking problems. \nIn my talk\, I will overview progress in the area and its connection with other fields: theoretical computer science\, number theory\, and analysis. In particular\, I will discuss a joint work with Zilin Jiang confirming Fejes Toth’s long-standing zone conjecture and recent results with Alexey Glazyrin and Roman Karasev on a polynomial plank problem\, a far-reaching generalization of Bang’s theorem.

Douglas\, Harvard University.\n15:30 ч. Лекция 1: Tameness and quantum field theory \nРезюме: I will discuss the notion of a space of quantum field theories\, and explain various approaches to its definition and some of its expected properties. I will then cover joint work with Thomas Grimm and Lorenz Schlechter on tameness of quantum field theories.  This is based on the mathematical concept of o-minimal structures\, which has been very powerful for proving finiteness results. Given a QFT or a space of QFTs\, we define a corresponding structure\, and conjecture in many cases that it is tame (o-minimal).  We also show that Feynman amplitudes at any fixed loop order are tame. \n17:00 ч. Лекция 2: Numerical methods for differential geometry \nРезюме: State of the art machine learning techniques can be adapted to many problems in scientific and mathematical computation. Sylvester’s law of inertia can be formulated in terms of group actions when considering real linear groups acting on real quadratic forms by base change. DESCRIPTION:Дата: 17.10.2023 г.\, 14:00 ч. \nМясто: Зала 403\, ИМИ – БАН \nДокладчик: Михаил Школников\, ИМИ – БАН \nДоклад: Tropical structures in sandpile model \nРезюме: The sandpile model is a cellular automaton that can be defined on any graph. Though it has appeared independently in a variety of contexts\, it attracted tremendous attention from the wide scientific community when its instance on a large domain of the square lattice was put forward as the simplest rigorous example of self-organized criticality. Such phenomena\, real-life examples of which are earthquakes\, solar flares\, or neuronal avalanches\, could be vaguely described as being between order and chaos\, demonstrating power laws without being finely tuned\, and transcending the scale. Tropical geometry\, on the other hand\, is a field of pure mathematics often presented as a combinatorial version of algebraic geometry. I will tell how tropical curves arise in the scaling limit of the sandpile model in the vicinity of the maximal stable state and explain two major consequences inspired by this fact. The first one is that there is a continuous model for self-organized criticality\, the only known model of a kind\, defined in the realm of tropical geometry. The second is that the totality of recurrent states in the original sandpile model\, the sandpile group\, approximates a continuous group\, a tropical Abelian variety\, which is functorial with respect to inclusions of domains\, allowing to compute its scaling limit as a space of circle-valued harmonic functions on the whole lattice. \n\nTropical structures in sandpile model\, talk by Mikhail Shkolnikov\, IMI-BAS \n\n

There are multiple   descriptions of these structures: as certain flat PGL_2-bundles\, as Sturm-Liouville operators\, as holomorphic connections on the (first) jet bundle of the dual of a theta-characteristic\, etc. This mini-course is an introduction to the fundamentals of projective structures\, accessible to students and non-specialists. This series of talks will be devoted to some recent developments based on relations between the following three classical notions. \n\nThe ring of -invariant polynomials \(\mathbb C[V]^K\) is finitely generated by homogeneous elements\, by a theorem of Hilbert\, but the proof is notoriously nonconstructive. The degrees of a minimal set of generators are canonically determined by \(f\)\, and will be the focus of the discussion.\nThe \(K\)-equivariant momentum map \(\mu:\mathbb P(V)\to \mathfrak k^*\) associated to the Fubini-Study form encodes in its image properties of the invariant ring \(\mathbb C[V]^K\) and the \(K\)-module structure of the entire polynomial ring \(\mathbb C[V]\)\, due to theorems of Mumford and Brion. While many general properties of momentum images have been established\, explicit descriptions remain unknown in many cases south for in physics and quantum information theory.\nProjective geometry of complex \(K\)-orbits in \(\mathbb P(V)\); their fundamental forms\, osculating varieties and secant varieties.\n\nGeneral relations between the first two topics are well established\, even in a more general context. There are also well known relations between invariant theory and projective geometry\, but secant varieties have only recently been brought to the discussion and are subject of current interest. \nAfter introducing the basic notions\, I will derive some properties of momentum images related to fundamental forms and osculating varieties\, as well as a lower bound on the minimal positive degree of a homogeneous invariant\, derived using secant varieties. In this talk I will derive an algebraic formula for the Milnor number of a smoothable complex analytic curve singularity X by relating it to the Euler characteristic of its smoothing\, which in turn I will relate to the multiplicity of the Jacobian ideal of X and and the multiplicity of X at its singular point. If time permits I will discuss generalizations to higher dimensions. This is a report on a joint work with Gaffney and Bengus-Lasnier. \n

In this talk we present a new correspondence for pairs \((\mathbb{F}\,H)\) formed by a flag manifold \(\mathbb{F}\) together with an $H$-flux on \(\mathbb{F}\). Given its role within our correspondence\, infinitesimal \(T\)-duality may be viewed as a source of \(H\)-flux\, in the sense that it contributes towards taking fluxless pairs \((\mathbb{F}\,0)\) to pairs \((\mathbb{F}^\vee\, H^\vee)\) carrying nontrivial flux \(H^\vee\neq 0\). We also illustrate how our correspondence exchanges complex structures with symplectic ones up to \(B\)-transformations. This is a joint work with Elizabeth Gasparim and Lino Grama.

DESCRIPTION:На 18 януари 2024 г. (четвъртък) от 13:00 часа в зала 403 на ИМИ-БАН и онлайн чрез платформата zoom ще се проведе съвместно заседание на \nСеминара на секция „Алгебра и логика” \nи Семинара на Международния център по математически науки към ИМИ-БАН. \nДоклад на тема \nNilpotent algebras\, groups and beyond\nще изнесе Yuri Bahturin (Memorial University of Newfoundland\, Canada) (joint work with Alexander Olshanskii). \nАбстракт: We study various correspondences between finite-dimensional nilpotent algebras and (quasi)groups similar to those given by the circle product in the case of associative algebras or by the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formulas in the the case of Lie algebras or their generalizations.
