Vladimir Mitankin from IMI receives a grant from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme
Part of Horizon Europe, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) are programmes that aim at excellence in research. MSCA is the leading program of the European Union for funding the research work of doctoral and postdoctoral fellows.
The project Generalised Integrality and Applications to Number Theory of Dr. Vladimir Mitankin will be carried out under the scientific supervision of Prof. Ludmil Katzarkov.
Dr. Mitankin investigates classical questions in Diophantine geometry on the existence and the density of points on algebraic varieties using methods from both algebraic geometry and analytic number theory. The focus in the MSCA grant is aimed at semi-integral points, a notion corresponding to rational points satisfying an integrality condition with respect to a weighted boundary divisor. Introduced by Campana and by Darmon, semi-integral points provide at the same time an intermediate notion and a generalization of the notions of rational and integral points. The research aims, on one hand, at further developing the relatively new theory of semi-integral points, on the other hand, at obtaining information about integral points on algebraic varieties inaccessible with classical methods and, lastly, at applying the theory of semi-integral points with the hope of solving some classical problems in number theory.
Vladimir Mitankin is a Sofia University graduate with a master’s degree in number theory under the supervision of Prof. Doychin Tolev and Assoc. Prof. Ivan Chipchakov. He received his PhD training at the University of Bristol in 2017 with Prof. Tim Browning as advisor. Then, he subsequently became a postdoctoral fellow at the Mathematics Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, and the Leibniz University Hannover. Currently, Vladimir works at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics under the Scientific Programme “Enhancing the Research Capacity in Mathematical Sciences” (PIKOM).
Bulgaria welcomes the 41st Balkan Mathematical Olympiad
From April 27 to May 2, 2024, Bulgaria is hosting the 41st Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO). It will be held in the resort “St. St. Constantine and Elena”, Varna. A record number of participants is expected to arrive in Bulgaria – over 130 students from 22 countries.
The competition day for students is April 29. Within 4 and a half hours, each student solves 4 problems in algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory.
The Balkan Mathematics Olympiad was founded by Bulgaria, Romania and Greece in 1984, and was held for the first time in Athens. Over the years, the competition became more popular and today it is one of the most prestigious international competitions in mathematics.
According to the regulations of the competition, the participants can be the 11 Balkan countries – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, Moldova, the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Turkey. BMO can only be organized by one of these member countries, and participants in the competition can only be teams from these countries. The host country can also invite teams from other countries to try their hand at the competition – this year we welcome competitors from 11 countries, including France, Great Britain, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and others. Each country’s team can consist of a maximum of six students, and the host country – Bulgaria – will participate in the Olympiad with two teams. The Bulgarian participants in the BMO are selected from among the best performers from the Autumn Mathematics Tournament, the National Winter Mathematics Competition and the Spring Mathematics Competition followed by an additional selection with control competitions.
The main organizers of the Balkan Mathematics Olympiad in Bulgaria are the Ministry of Education and Science and the Union of Bulgarian Mathematicians (UBM). The chairman of the organizing committee is Prof. Nikolay Nikolov, and the secretaries are Prof. Stanislav Harizanov and Alexander Velinov. The Olympiad is held under the patronage of the Mayor of Varna Blagomir Kotsev. Partners of BMO2024 are the Natural Sciences Olympic Teams Association (NSOTA), Jane Street and Astea Solutions.
Institute of Mathematics and Informatics signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PROS Bulgaria
The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PROS Bulgaria, a leading provider of AI-powered solutions for the digital economy. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in fostering research and development in the fields of mathematics, informatics, and their applications in technology and science.
The Memorandum outlines a framework for cooperation aimed at leveraging the strengths of both organizations to advance the development of innovative technologies and methodologies. PROS Bulgaria is renowned for its advanced solutions that enable companies to efficiently price, configure, and sell their offerings across multiple channels. By partnering with the Institute, PROS aims to further enhance its capabilities and contribute to the scientific community.
Key activities envisioned under this Memorandum include joint research projects, academic exchanges, and the organization of seminars and workshops. These initiatives are expected to facilitate the sharing of academic and practical insights, leading to the publication of groundbreaking research findings. Moreover, the partnership will focus on the development of educational materials, aiming to nurture the next generation of scientists and technologists.
Fourth Annual Conference “Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe”
The International Center for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS-Sofia and the Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami (IMSA) are organizing the Fourth International Conference “Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe”. The conference will be held on December 18 to 20, 2023 and will be hosted by the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia.
The initiative Women in Mathematics of South-Eastern Europe, aiming at promoting the role of female mathematicians, started in Dec 2020, when the inaugural conference took place. Even then, the organizers stated their intention to turn the scientific forum into a prestigious annual event. A special distinguished guest of the inaugural conference was Prof. Mina Teicher from the Department of Mathematics and Gonda Brain Research Center, Bar-Ilan University, Israel, Director of Emmy Noether Institute for Mathematics.
One of the main goals of the conference organizers is to create new long-term collaborations between mathematicians in South-Eastern Europe. They expect that through participation women mathematicians will attract the attention of young researchers and researchers from less-favoured countries.
The event is held with the support of the Bulgarian Research Program Enhancing the Research Capacity in Mathematical Sciences (PIKOM) and Simons Foundation.
The official opening of the conference will take place on December 18, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. in the Hall 403 of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics.

Tenth Vasil A. Popov Prize
The Tenth Vasil A. Popov Prize was awarded to Matthew Colbrook, Assistant Professor at the University of Cambridge.
Matthew (Matt) was recognized for his outstanding contributions to approximation theory, particularly his work on the approximation of spectral properties of operators in infinite-dimensional spaces and the approximation power and trainability of neural networks. Computing approximations of spectra in infinite dimensions has been a significant challenge for mathematicians since the 1950s. Matt has introduced new algorithms that converge and come with explicit approximation guarantees. He has also developed a myriad of techniques yielding optimal approximation results for different spectral properties of operators, classifying when this can and cannot be done in the Solvability Complexity Index Hierarchy, and solving other open problems such as approximating generic spectral measures, geometric spectra, and (data-driven) Koopman operators in dynamical systems.
Parallel to this work, Matt has contributed significantly to the problem of approximation power and trainability of neural networks. For example, in a paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Matt and his collaborators have shown that there are problems where stable and accurate neural networks exist, yet no training algorithm can produce such a network.
The “Vasil A. Popov” Prize is presented in honour of the Bulgarian mathematician Vasil A. Popov (1942-1990), who is best known for his contribution to the Theory of Approximations.
The prize was awarded for the first time in 1995. The prize, which consists of an engraved marble statuette and a cash prize, is awarded every three years for outstanding research contributions in the field in which Vasil Popov worked. Winners of the award can be young scientists – these are individuals who have received their doctorate in the last six years.
The Tenth Vasil A. Popov Prize, which consists of a pyramid trophy and a cash award of 2000 euros, was presented to Matthew by Albert Cohen of Sorbonne Université, Chair of the Popov Prize Selection Committee. The other members of the Selection Committee are Emmanuel Candes, Wolfgang Dahmen, Karlheinz Grochenig, Pencho Petrushev, Peter Oswald, and Vilmos Totik.
